Why a Spiritual Psychology?
A Soul-Centered Approach to Education - A Message from Drs. Ron and Mary HulnickWe have been reflecting recently upon the fact that we are in the midst of a truly amazing time in the history of human evolution. We are witnessing nothing less than the dying of one age while at the same time another is being born. This is a human transition of monumental proportions. It is a transition from fear to love as a predominant mode of existence. It is a transition from terror to peace; from tyranny to freedom; from competition to cooperation; and from the love of power to the power of love. It is a transition from man’s law to God’s Law.
Such a transition does not come easy for it tugs and tears at the fabric of some of our most basic definitions of reality itself — definitions so basic that we take them for granted as true and do not question them. Perhaps the single most fundamental of these definitions is the misunderstanding of who we are. In psychological terms, we could say that the greatest limiting problem we are wrestling with is a case of “mistaken identity.”
We were raised with the notion that we are separate from each other and that we have to compete to survive. And we have an awareness that there is a spiritual dimension that effects events in human scale. A psychology appropriate for this perspective is one that has as a goal the maximum adjustment of people for success measured in terms of this worldly reality.
At USM, we work from a different perspective. We perceive ourselves as connected to each other, and we realize that our best efforts at survival come through mutual cooperation. We are aware that we are souls having a human experience and our job is to align with the requirements for success in spiritual reality. A psychology appropriate for this perspective is one that has as a goal the alignment of individuals with their spiritual agenda. Such a psychology is newly emerging and we refer to it as “Spiritual Psychology.”
We have found that it is not only possible but relatively straight forward to educate students into enhanced experiences of love, trust, peace, freedom, cooperation, and integrity. Why? Because those are the very qualities that will be the hallmarks of those who will be successful in the age that is being born. Spiritual Psychology is for the children of the emerging age!
The irony is that the more we align with our spiritual agenda, the more we will have success in this world as well.
To graduates and current students, we invite you to step forward as an Ambassador of USM in even greater ways. Your Soul-Centered education is a highly valuable commodity in this world, and you have much to share.
